Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my child on a PCHA hockey team?
Open registration for the fall season starts at the end of March. Get a registration form from the Plymouth Cultural Center or download one from the PCHA website. Players are added to the wait list by postmark date. Pre-registered players from the previous season are taken first, open spots are filled from the wait list. If you have questions about the wait list, contact the coordinator for your child's age group.

What's the difference between house and travel hockey?
House hockey is a recreational hockey team. Players are selected by a draft of all age-eligible players and all players get an equal chance to play, regardless of skill level. House hockey players can expect to skate 2-3 times a week and play in the Little Caesar's Amateur Hockey League house division, comprised of local hockey teams (typically Westland, Garden City, Novi, Farmington, Kensington Valley etc). Coaches may elect to compete in tournaments and scrimmages in addition to league play.
Travel hockey is a competitive hockey team for which players must try out and be selected by the coach. Travel teams will compete in the travel division of the Little Caesar's Amateur Hockey League (expect to travel an hour or more for some league games) and will usually play in 3 or more tournaments, plus scrimmages. Travel teams often skate 3-4 times per week.

When does the season start? When does it end? How much is this going to cost me?
The official season start date is September 1. Tryouts and skates for travel teams can begin in July or August. The draft skate for house is held in August. All teams will skate through March. The regular season ends in January, playoffs begin at the end of January with district, league and state playoffs continuing into March. Teams may enter tournaments at any time throughout the season.
The cost for the season varies on the choices made by the team. Typically, a house team can expect to pay between $1200-1500 per season. Each player is responsible for providing their own equipment, including skates and sticks. The team provides jerseys, socks and pucks. A travel team can expect to pay considerably more. It is recommended you discuss the financial commitment with the coach/manager before you join the team. Fundraisers are common; sponsors are encouraged to help defray costs.

What days and times will my child skate?
Ice is rotated amongst the teams. Younger age teams typically skate earlier in the day with later evening times reserved for the older age groups. The schedule varies, dependent on ice available at the rinks. The PCHA skates out of the Plymouth Cultural Center, Redford and Yost arenas.

What does my registration fee pay for?
The registration fee paid by each player covers the cost of a set of two jerseys and socks, which the player keeps, league registration fees, referees for regular season games, PCHA administration fees including copies, telephone charges, website hosting, goalie equipment for Mite teams, bank and insurance fees and all other costs involved in running a hockey association. The registration fee is non-refundable.

How is the PCHA administered?
The PCHA is run by an annually elected Board of Directors. The elected board consists of a President, Vice President, Financial Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Additional appointed board members include coordinators for each age group, equipment coordinator, tournament coordinator, public relations and website coordinator and director of coaches. The PCHA follows the rules and standards of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association, USA Hockey and the Little Caesar's Hockey League. Board meetings are held regularly throughout the season and are open to the general membership.

I have an issue with my child's coach. What do I do?
The first thing to do is address the coach personally. If you are uncomfortable doing this, approach the team manager or an assistant coach. If you feel your issue is unresolved, the next step is to contact the coordinator at your age level. Your coordinator will work with you and the coach to resolve the situation. If the coordinator is unable to resolve the situation, the director of coaches will become involved. Do not approach the Board until you have exhausted these channels.

Can I put up a website for my team?
Yes, you can. Please download a copy of the website policy and make sure that you do not include any inappropriate materials. It is a good idea to have a password-protected site that only your team can access to keep children safe from unwanted contact. To have your website linked to the PCHA page, please email the web master.

How do I get a copy of the Sharks or Stingrays logo?
Go to PCHA Forms for downloads in a variety of formats.

How do I contact the PCHA Board or get on the agenda for a board meeting?
You may contact anyone on the Board by emailing the PCHA or leaving a message on the PCHA hotline at (734) 254-9198 or mail to PCHA, P.O. Box 701194, Plymouth MI, 48170-0960.
